The original manuscript can be found in the "Deutches Staatsbibliothek", Berlin.

"Equal" or "Egal" means a choral composition usually for voices of the same timbre, that is to say, all equal; male of female and which have the same rhythmic motion.

In relation to instrumental music, the meaning of the term remains the same as the original. Therefore in this case the four trombones translate to an imagined choir of male voices. It is important to remember that trombones, seldom used in the regular orchestra of Beethoven's time, conversely had very frequent use in public ceremonies, principally religious (precessions, funeral). They lend, in a certain sense, a nobility and majesty. Very often they also support or accompany the voice.

The 3 "Equales" were composed in 1812 during the time Beethoven spent at Linz, at the invitation of Kapellmeister Franz Xaver Glòggl, with the idea that they would be performed during funery ceremonies.

The manuscript carries the date of 2nd November (All Souls' Day), probably the date on which they were first performed.

See also the version sung at Beethoven's funerals, Biamonti 548.
